Any Tobiasse fans out there. I just discovered his work last weekend and I think it's amazing. I understand that he was the artist that Chiam Potok spent a great deal of time with prior to writing My Name is Asher Lev. It was interesting because as I looked at his work I mentioned to the gallery owner that it reminded me of a book I had read (actually one of my top 5 books) and she immediately brought out some photo's of Tobiasse, her father and Potok in France from the 1960's! Pretty wild.
I also just found out that in all of his paintings he has secret messages under the paint, written in Yiddish. The only way to ever discover the message would involve destroying the art work so the messages remain Tobiasse secrets. I think that is so cool! |
